SPCC Members host events and classes throughout Colorado. Each month we have a complete calendar of events.
SPCC Regional Liaisons
The SPCC Regional Liaisons are a statewide network of individuals who
seeks to inspire others to raise their community’s awareness about
suicide and help us spread the word that prevention is possible.
The objectives of SPCC’s Regional Liaisons program are to:
• Increase public awareness of suicide as a public health problem;
• Promote local, state, and federal policies and programs that prevent
suicide;
• Disseminate information to individuals in the community regarding SPCC
and other suicide prevention organizations’ activities;
• Build partnerships with other local suicide prevention and mental
health agencies, governments, media and other organizations with a stake
in public health;
• Help remove the stigma associated with suicide by bringing the subject
out in the open and discussing what can be done to prevent it;
• Recruit other advocates to join SPPC and the fight against suicide;
and
• Give a voice to suicide survivors so they can become a positive force
in the community and prevent future suicides.
The Regional Liaisons team is an important and effective way to
dramatically alter the course of legislative decisions. Efforts on
specific pieces of legislation can be most effective when implemented
against the background of knowledge and understanding that the Regional
Liaisons develop when educating policymakers and the community.
Since legislators cannot be familiar with every bill before them, they
rely on staff or other individuals to develop an understanding of the
issues. Often constituents in a particular profession or with interests
are identified and their names kept on file for the legislator to
contact on specific topics. Legislative battles are won one vote at a
time. The basic principles are the volume of contacts, consistency of
message, and timely communications with public officials.
