WHAT IS SPCC?

The Suicide Prevention Coalition of Colorado (SPCC) was formed in 1999, when concerned citizens set out to create a statewide agency with the purpose of preventing suicide and creating a resource network for those who were working to prevent suicide around the state.

Today, SPCC’s membership of concerned agencies, organizations and individuals who are working in the areas of suicide prevention, intervention and postvention has statewide reach.

The Suicide Prevention Coalition of Colorado works statewide to prevent suicide and its impact.

Facebook to Use AI to Help Prevent Suicide

Facebook has announced that it will begin using artificial intelligence (AI) to identify Facebook users at risk of dying by suicide in an effort to prevent suicide deaths. The news comes after multiple people live streamed their deaths on the platform.

“It’s hard to be running this company and feel like, okay, well, we didn’t do anything because no one reported it to us,” Zuckerberg told BuzzFeed News in an interview last month. “You want to go build the technology that enables the friends and people in the community to go reach out and help in examples like that.”

When Facebook's AI recognizes an individual in a situation that is “very likely to be urgent,” it will notify the Facebook team and prominently present a self-harm reporting option to friends of the individual in need.
